Why use bar soap over modern, mystery shower gel?

Why use bar soap over modern, mystery shower gel?

Why Choose a Bar of Traditional Soap Instead of Shower Gel?

There was a time when washing meant reaching for a simple bar of soap.

Today, most bathrooms are filled with plastic bottles of shower gel, body wash and liquid soap. Walk down the supermarket aisle and you'll find hundreds of different options, from heavily fragranced body washes to products marketed around complicated-sounding ingredients.

But perhaps soap doesn't need to be complicated.

At Coal & Tallow, we make traditional-style soap bars in Wales using bovine tallow, plant oils and essential oils. Our philosophy is straightforward: make a proper bar of soap, give it a distinctive scent and let the ingredients do the work.

What is the difference between soap and shower gel?

Traditional soap and shower gel are different types of cleansing products.

A traditional bar of soap is made through saponification, where fats or oils react with an alkali to create soap. A properly made bar can be solid, long-lasting and capable of producing a rich lather.

Shower gel is a liquid cleanser. Depending on the formulation, it can contain water, surfactants, fragrances, preservatives, moisturisers and other ingredients.

Neither format is automatically right for everyone. Some people prefer liquid body wash, while others prefer the simplicity of a traditional bar of soap.

For those looking to reduce the number of bottles in their bathroom, however, a bar of soap is an obvious alternative.

Why use a bar of soap?

The biggest advantage is simplicity.

A bar of soap doesn't require a plastic bottle or pump. It takes up very little space and can be kept on a simple soap dish between uses.

A good-quality bar can also last for a surprisingly long time when it is allowed to dry properly between washes.

There's something satisfying about using a product that does exactly what it needs to do without taking over half the shower.

Is traditional soap better than shower gel?

That's really a matter of personal preference.

The important thing is to understand what you're buying rather than assuming that one format is universally better.

Traditional soap can be particularly appealing if you:

  • Prefer solid products

  • Want to reduce plastic packaging

  • Like traditional or old-fashioned products

  • Prefer essential oil fragrances

  • Want a hard-wearing bar

  • Don't want a collection of plastic bottles in the shower

  • Like straightforward ingredients

  • Prefer masculine, woody or earthy scents

For others, shower gel may remain their preferred option.

At Coal & Tallow, we're simply interested in making an alternative.

Why tallow soap?

One of the defining ingredients in Coal & Tallow soap is bovine tallow.

Tallow has been used in traditional soap making for generations. Its properties make it particularly well suited to producing a firm bar of soap.

When combined with plant oils, tallow can form part of a balanced soap formulation designed to produce a hard, long-lasting bar with a satisfying lather.

We don't use tallow because it sounds fashionable.

We use it because it has a history in soap making and because we like what it brings to the finished bar.

Why essential oils?

The scent of a soap can completely change the experience of using it.

Instead of creating a range of generic shower-gel fragrances, Coal & Tallow uses essential oils to give each bar its own character.

Think juniper, cedarwood, black pepper, tea tree, citrus and herbs rather than overly sweet or floral fragrances.

Our aim is to create scents that feel natural, earthy and understated.

Men's soap doesn't need to be complicated

There is a reason many men's grooming products have traditionally been associated with straightforward scents such as cedarwood, pine, juniper, citrus and black pepper.

They're distinctive without being overpowering.

Coal & Tallow was created with that idea in mind.

Our bars are deliberately rugged, understated and masculine, designed for anyone who wants a proper bar of soap without the fuss.

There's no need for a separate product for every conceivable part of your body.

Sometimes a good bar of soap is enough.

Traditional soap and plastic packaging

One of the biggest differences between a bar of soap and shower gel is the packaging.

A typical bottle of shower gel is mostly water, contained in a plastic bottle designed to make dispensing convenient.

A solid bar takes a completely different approach.

It's compact, doesn't require a pump and can be packaged without the large plastic bottle associated with liquid products.

That doesn't mean every bar of soap is automatically environmentally superior. Packaging, ingredients, manufacturing and transport all matter.

But if you're trying to reduce plastic bottles in your bathroom, replacing liquid body wash with a solid soap bar is one straightforward change you can make.

What makes a good bar of soap?

For us, it comes down to a few simple things.

It should clean well.

It should produce a good lather.

It should last.

It should smell good without being overpowering.

And perhaps most importantly, it should be enjoyable to use.

That's why our soaps combine traditional soap-making principles with ingredients chosen for each individual bar.

Our Terra bar, for example, combines bovine tallow with red clay and fine pumice, finished with cedarwood, lime and lavandin.

Black Bar takes a darker approach, combining activated charcoal with juniper, tea tree and black pepper.

Different bars. Different character. The same basic idea.

Bringing traditional soap into a modern bathroom

Traditional doesn't have to mean old-fashioned.

You can appreciate the history of soap making while still wanting a product that looks good, smells good and belongs in a modern bathroom.

That's essentially what Coal & Tallow is about.

Traditional ingredients. Modern presentation. Welsh roots. No unnecessary fuss.

We're not trying to convince everyone to throw away their shower gel.

We're making soap for the people who already feel that a proper bar of soap makes more sense.
